Making The Brand: Putting A Skin Care Line Together

The most humbling experience in building this brand thus far has been having the brains, connections, and customers but not having the financial resources to do everything I want to do at launch. Money will make shit real for you every single time.

Three years ago, when I first began thinking about what my own skin care line would look like, I knew I wanted to launch with the essentials: cleanser, toner, two essential serums, moisturizer, and SPF. What I didn’t know was that launching with six SKUs—most being different sizes—would be incredibly costly for me, a broke boi. I also didn’t know that working with labs to create custom formulas would be so expensive in and of itself. I thought I’d spend maybe $5K total but I quickly learned that custom formulation is anywhere between $8-$10K per product. I also didn’t know that some of the key ingredients I would want in certain products—like Benzoyl Peroxide, Salicylic Acid, and all the ingredients that make up SPF—are considered drugs and require a whole different set of rules and regulations from the FDA. That was a very humbling learning experience for me as well.

So, taking all of these things in consideration, I have only decided to focus on the acne gang first while putting the bulk of my money and research into two more potent, active serums that are better suited for hyperpigmentation and some products that are better suited for the dry skin gang (2021 will be exciting!).

The Brand Launch Products

I released samples of all products currently in development out into the wild among my friends (in July) and clients (in August). Sampling my own products cost me money that I didn’t have (~$2K) but the feedback has been insightful. As someone who is in a financial struggle at the moment, I can’t promise I’ll be doing samples going forward but it was nice to do once. Unsurprisingly, people are most excited about and more willing to buy the products that cost the most for me to produce. Of course.

Anyway, let me introduce you to the official Fairy Glow Mother skin care line up!
